Lottery 2000
Anne – Grand Prize Winner of $1,000,000 TAX FREE CA$H!
“When Anne and her husband Lloyd returned home from a weekend boating trip, they knew there was something unusual about all that laughter on their answering machine.
The caller was Barry Forbes, chair of the Burnaby Hospital Foundation, and his message was short, sweet, and somewhat surprising. I think you might want to call me back, he said amid outrageous shrieks of laughter in the background.
On Monday morning, while her husband was at work, Anne returned the unusual call to hear the kind of news most people can only dream about. She and her husband were the official grand prize winners of the first annual Burnaby Hospital Million Dollar Lottery.
I’m pretty excited about it, Anne said Monday afternoon, after recovering from the shock. We knew it had something to do with the lottery, but we just thought it meant we won something nice – we thought: There’s no way we won the million.
Well, I was shocked and ecstatic. I’ve never won anything like this before. I called my husband at work and he didn’t believe it either. All his colleagues in the background guffawed too.
It’s awful exciting, and I don’t think it’s really sunk in, yet.
But it was true – the pair became the newest Canadian millionaires. And it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving couple.
Anne and Lloyd are well-known in Burnaby as two hard-working professionals and community activists. Anne is a sales manager in the high tech field who is currently between jobs and volunteering with the Burnaby Board of Trade on its first annual Burnaby Business Excellence Awards. Lloyd works for the government.
The family are also in the market for a new home, and expect to put their winnings to good use. We’ve been looking at condominiums and now we’re probably going to buy a single family home, she said.
Anne said she and Lloyd will both keep working, although they will use some of their winnings to help out their families.
I don’t expect this to make a big change in our lives, but it will make things a little bit easier, she said.
What we’ll do most likely is set up to improve the quality of life for our families, and give to some specific charities we’ve always been eager to support.”
